Whenever I ask a foreigner if they’ve been to Mexico, most of them mention Cancun before any other destination. It’s easy to understand why: it has some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, there are tons of resorts, and you can easily fly in from places like Amsterdam, Istanbul, or Buenos Aires. The downside, perhaps, is that most visitors only stick to the familiar – the large hotels, the flashy restaurants on Zona Hotelera, the nightclubs. And while there’s a time and a place for that – I’ve enjoyed a stay or two at a good, old all-inclusive – here at Mexzine we’re all about finding unique spots with cool stories behind them. With that in mind, I drew from my own experience and enlisted my friend and Riviera Maya guru, Alana, to contribute a few of her favorite Cancun gems.

Where To Stay

Casa Ixum // The Yucatán Peninsula’s traditional rural architecture finds its chicest expression at this four-suite boutique hotel on Avenida Nader, with elements like stone, wood, and palapa roofs that create an unexpectedly serene hideaway in Centro. At the cozy restaurant, chef Lucía Pereda blends international flavors with local touches, while the aptly named Leisure Terrace calls for slow mornings with a cup of coffee, relaxed evenings with a cocktail or two, and even inspired work sessions, should you need to crack that laptop open during your stay.

Nizuc // Placed on the tranquil Punta Nizuc, this 12-hectare property houses 274 suites and villas, yet never feels massive or overwhelming, with space as a priority across every guest room and common area. One of its greatest assets: its family-friendly suites and pools, balanced with adult-only accommodations and lounging areas. Led by chef Sylvain Desbois, culinary offerings include Ramona, focused on contemporary Mexican specialties. Carve time for relaxation at the spa – the first by ESPA in the region – featuring unique rituals focused on sleep and gut health.

Mezcal Boutique Hotel // With a lush garden that seems to take over the entire property, this charming 26-room boutique hotel is hiding in the heart of Downtown Cancun. Don’t be fooled by its size – there’s plenty to do here, from browsing local crafts at Casa Nawalla boutique or enjoying a cigar at Humo Smoke Shop to melting into a massage at the spa. Of course, if all you want to do is hang out by its cenote-inspired pool and order ceviche and sushi from Mero 18, nobody will judge you.

Where to Eat

Hanaichi // Of all the places to find legit sushi in Cancun, I never expected it to be the nightclub-packed area around Coco Bongo. Yet tucked in a strip mall, here it is: Hanaichi, a Japanese-owned joint serving some of the freshest sushi I’ve had in years. Grab a seat at the counter and watch the chefs craft nigiri, temaki, and maki with precision. A few favorites: the scallop nigiri, the hamachi don, and the chicken karaage – all washed down with an icy Sapporo.

Navíos // With an unbeatable setting on a deck floating on the Nichupté Lagoon, this is the table to book if you’re in the mood for a romantic sunset dinner. The extensive menu is a celebration of fresh fish and seafood, with standouts like smoked marlin tostada, black aguachile, clam-and-scallop birria, and Rosarito-style lobster tacos (there are also options like rib eye and chicken milanesa if there’s a fish-averse guest in your party).

La Dolce Vita // If you’re anything like me, Italian food isn’t merely a craving, but a constant need. And when in Cancun, this beloved staple since 1983 really hits the spot. The menu features beautifully prepared classics like caprese salad, spaghetti alla carbonara, gnocchi al pesto, and tagliata di manzo, and even includes great gluten-free and vegan options, a rarity in many an Italian restaurant. The recently renovated space and warm service crown it all.

Wani // There’s always a good reason to take a break and visit this beautiful, Japanese-inspired coffee shop on Nader. Mornings mean freshly-baked pastries and fluffy French toast, while afternoons are for homemade onigiri and the house stars: the sandos. Try the chicken katsu or the cheese-avocado for a meatless option, all served with addictive shoestring fries. Throughout the day, its liquid offerings remain strong, from ceremonial matcha and creamy matcha lattes to hojicha and iced coffee.

Where to Drink

Numa // An ideal antidote to Cancun’s massive clubs, this intimate speakeasy hides above Wani and shares its Tokyo-infused vibes. With only a small communal table, it’s perfect for a night out with your +1 or a couple of friends – especially if you’re in the mood to make a few new ones. Sake and cocktails are the stars here, especially tried-and-true concoctions like Negronis and martinis. Should you feel a bit peckish, excellent bites like baos and wings are the way to go.

Culto Vinyl Bar // One of the newest spots in downtown Cancun, Culto is your go-to if you’re in the mood for an intimate, music-forward evening, courtesy of a curated vinyl selection ranging from Fleetwood Mac to Billie Eilish. The beautifully outfitted space, with record-lined walls and moody lighting, sets the stage for potent cocktails, shareable snacks, and DJ spins. The vibes are equally strong in the daytime, with good music pairing exceptionally well with omelets, French toast, and lattes.

La Coyota // Caribbean vibes abound at this beloved downtown bar, designed for dinner, drinks, and dancing. The food menu is extensive and bar-friendly – think burgers, tacos, and tostadas that find their ideal matches in the house margaritas and piña coladas. Bring your best salsa and bachata moves to the dance floor, and don’t be surprised if you end up dancing with a stranger. If you’re a total amateur, check out the free lessons offered each week.

Where to Explore

Museo Maya de Cancun & San Miguelito Archaeological Zone // Cancun’s first archaeological museum, this modern space houses one of the country's most significant collections of Maya culture. Blending modern galleries with open-air spaces, it also invites you to appreciate the region’s natural beauty, crowned by an esplanade with sculptures by Jan Hendrix. Your ticket also grants you access to the San Miguelito Archaeological Zone, a complex surrounded by lush jungle that was possibly once linked to other regional sites, like Tulum and Xelhá.

Nichupté Lagoon // Before anything else, Cancun was and still is a place of breathtaking natural beauty, and this 3,000-hectare nature reserve is proof. Composed of seven lakes and linked to the Caribbean through two channels, Nichupté Lagoon is surrounded by rich mangroves and home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Find a lagoon experience that suits your adrenaline levels – from a sunrise kayak tour to a speedboat expedition, all the way to a leisurely sunset cruise.

Isla Contoy // One of the prettiest and most pristine (I don’t use that word lightly) corners of the Mexican Caribbean coast, this Protected Natural Area is incredibly biodiverse, home to some 98 plant species, 173 types of birds, plus endangered sea turtles and even whale sharks. As access is limited to only 200 visitors a day, make sure to book a legit tour with enough time, which usually includes snacks and a snorkeling stop in the Ixlaché reef.

Cenote Exploration // As naturally stunning as they are spiritually meaningful to the Maya community, these natural sinkholes are sprinkled across the Yucatán Peninsula. Ruta de los Cenotes, starting near Puerto Morelos, features a series of cenotes that include the open-air Cenote Verde Lucero, where you can zipline above the water, and Siete Bocas, a favorite among divers. For a full day of exploring, combo it with a stop for lunch by the beach in Puerto Morelos.\

Let’s Chat: Avidan Lebenthal, Founder of Taco Mensch

Out of the many, many food-centric experiences available in Mexico City, food tours can be some of the most fun. Cristina Alonso embarked on a particularly good one a few weeks ago, hopping around the city through bites of quesabirrias, tacos al pastor, and tlacoyos with Avidan Lebenthal of Taco Mensch. She chatted with Avidan to learn more about the inspiration behind the business and how the beauty of hospitality can be expressed through a simple taco.

Cristina: Taco Mensch was born of your love of hospitality. Tell us your origin story.

Avidan: I was very fortunate, because both my parents were amazing cooks and hosts, so I was exposed to that from a very young age, mostly living in Venezuela when I was a teenager. And I have family here in Mexico who own one of the biggest kosher catering businesses. My uncle also exposed me to incredible food. We used to go to restaurants, and he would explain how things were prepared, and we took photos with his film camera – before taking food photos was a thing.

Years later, I worked as a dishwasher and a cook, and I opened a bar in Tel Aviv. I came back to Mexico, where I was born, in 2016, and I worked for my cousin who had one of the first businesses at Mercado Roma. I later worked for the people who run Tori Tori and for El Sargazo, one of the biggest fish distributors in Mexico. That was a huge challenge, very hard. At some point, I understood it was time to do my own thing, and I came up with Taco Mensch – essentially, the thing I love to do the most, which is hosting. I just like being with people and making sure they have a good time.

Cristina: How did the idea (and the name) come to be?

Avidan: I saw an influx of visitors coming into Mexico City around 2018. Obviously not as much as today, but it was starting. I thought maybe I could do a taco tour and bring my personality into it. My brother suggested the name because “mensch” in Yiddish means good human, good person. My mom always used to say, “It doesn’t cost you anything to be a mensch.”

I started hosting guests and building relationships with places like Cintli, which focuses on corn and nixtamal. And then COVID hit. At that point, I understood that the world is very volatile and that you always need a Plan B. I took a break, and I opened Bar Pita, a hole-in-the-wall serving pitas filled with delicious things. It’s also where I met my wife – she came to the restaurant one day, and that’s how we met. That was a lot of fun, but at some point it became too much, so I closed Bar Pita to focus on the tours. We onboarded more guides, and we created more tours. In the middle of all of it, I had cancer and a bone marrow transplant, but I was very lucky because the business kept going. 2026 is the first year that I’m fully back, and I love it.

Cristina: The tour we took a few weeks ago was so much fun, not just because of the food, but I loved that each place we went to has a story behind it.

Avidan: Definitely. One of the best things is the relationship that we have developed with our purveyors –the taco spots, the people at the market–, and the way people can learn about them. The ladies who sell tlacoyos outside Mercado Medellín, for example, they travel like two hours every day to be there. I think it’s important for us to share all of that with our guests. It’s a big responsibility. And I also think that while, yes, the city has gentrified, we have to evolve, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Like, the tlacoyo ladies were on Netflix, and that’s amazing. They can provide for their families. If we’re going to be a part of this, we might as well benefit the community and go beyond the top 10 list of restaurants that are everywhere else.

Cristina: Why do you think people choose Taco Mensch?

Avidan: There are many amazing companies in Mexico City, and I think competition is healthy and it’s good. Honestly, I think people choose us because of our reviews. We have really good reviews, and I think people trust that we can deliver.

Cristina: I’m going to end on a bit of an emotional note. Taco Mensch has survived huge challenges, between COVID and your time in treatment, so there’s obviously something special there. What do you think that is?

Avidan: I’m very fortunate to have surrounded myself with incredible people who share the same values. It starts with Angie, my wife, who always pushes me and makes sure I step out of my comfort zone, along with all our amazing hosts who keep the business alive.

I know there are a lot of hot topics in Mexico and around the world these days, but I feel like hospitality is the vessel that bridges all the differences. When we’re all around the table eating tacos, we’re equals. It’s such a beautiful way to connect.

Bar Spotlight: Tonana at Casa Hoyos, in San Miguel de Allende

Packed with color and personality, Casa Hoyos is one of our favorite boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende. Now, we have a new excuse to visit it: Tonana, its rooftop bar. Imagined by hotel founder Vianey Torres and Oscar Valle, of Limantour and Despacho Margarita fame, the bar is a tribute to Mexico’s heritage and the goddess Tonantzin, through a seasonally rotating menu that puts endemic ingredients at the forefront. Explainer: The Mystical World of Cenotes

If you Google “Riviera Maya” or “Yucatán,” it is highly likely that you’ll come across photos of cenotes, a complex network of caves and waterways that crisscross the Yucatán Peninsula, proving it has some of the most spectacular natural settings in the world. But beyond their beauty, cenotes are a major part of the area’s culture and identity. More than 65 million years ago, the entire Yucatán Peninsula was submerged underwater and was part of a coral reef system. The impact of the Chicxulub asteroid – yes, the one that wiped the dinosaurs off the face of the Earth – lifted this reef system out of the water. Over time, rain and seawater made their way back into some of the area’s limestone caves, and land collapsed, creating sinkholes.

There are more than 7,000 cenotes across the Peninsula, each of them a connection to living Maya culture. The word cenote comes from the Maya ts’ono’ot, meaning “hole filled with water,” and these mystical caves have not only been essential sources of freshwater for centuries, but were also considered gateways to the underworld, where we all go when we cease to exist on this planet. Back in the day, the Maya would ask permission from the gods to enter a cenote, offering everything from gold and jade to human sacrifices. These days, offerings may come in simpler forms – say, flowers or seeds – but approaching cenotes respectfully is as important as it has ever been.

As you explore cenotes across Yucatán and Quintana Roo, you’ll realize they come in all shapes, forms, and sizes. Some are small openings, others are dark and cave-like, while others are open-air pools. The same variety applies to the way they operate. While some cenotes are privately run, others may be located inside hotels (Palmaïa in Playa Carmen and Oriundo in Valladolid boast their own cenotes) or even archaeological sites, like Gran Cenote Sagrado in Chichén Itzá. While some cenotes are carefully managed, others get overcrowded and lose their magic (researching the most sustainable ones in your area is always a good idea). Activities also run the gamut, from simply admiring them from the outside to swimming in their cool waters or even free-diving among the rock formations.

Some of my favorite cenotes are Jardín del Edén, near Xpu Há; Cenote Esmeralda, in Bacalar, and Cenote Yokdzonot in Yucatán. Wherever you’re exploring and whichever cenote you choose, remember they are all part of an underground network, so keeping one clean means helping the entire system survive. Avoid sunscreen or hair products when you visit – many cenotes even require you to shower on-site before you dive in – and maybe even silently ask permission to enter. No human sacrifices required.

Restaurant Spotlight: Jazamango in Todos Santos

The ultimate Baja ambassador, Tijuana-born chef Javier Plascencia has spent more than three decades celebrating the region’s culinary greatness with border-crossing projects. At this open-air Todos Santos spot, seasonality rules the menu, making local delights –from Ensenada shellfish to produce from the restaurant’s own garden– the stars in every bite. Dishes I still dream of include grilled chocolata clams with butter and beef jerky and the Pizza Jazamango, with basil pesto, spicy meatballs, portobello mushrooms, mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes, a glass of Mexican rosé on the side. –CA

Casa Files: La Gema Escondida in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido has no shortage of spectacular homes, but there’s something about this clifftop property: it has a huge heart. Owners Alex and Larry have infused every corner of the five-suite house with personality –think pretty wicker furniture, bold textiles, and thoughtful crafts from all over the country. The pièce de résistance, however, is the infinity pool, soaring above the crashing waves below, and reflecting spectacular colors as the sun sets over the Pacific. –CA

Hotel Bo // Envisioned as “a place to watch the rain falling,” this enchanting boutique hotel is a modern tribute to Chiapas and its culture. Designed by Muro Rojo architecture studio, its 22 spacious guest rooms are brought to life by colorful textiles, hexagonal tiles, and local crafts. Its boutique, Doce Lenguas, is perfect for souvenir shopping, with a curated selection of traditional crafts and modern design pieces, all Chiapas-made. Should rain showers, indeed, come your way, the library is especially cozy.

Sombra del Agua // Named after a poem by celebrated Chiapas-born poet Jaime Sabines, this hotel is housed in what was once San Cristóbal’s first luxury hotel in the early twentieth century: Hotel Español, its historic past still enriching its spirit. The state’s culture and soul infuse every space, from local pottery in the sunny courtyard honoring the traditions of Amatenango del Valle, to a candle-lined hallway that evokes the mystical atmosphere of the church at San Juan Chamula. Don’t skip dinner at its excellent restaurant, Tarumba, or a sip of pox at Casa Poxná.

Taller de Juan // Part boutique hotel, part art studio, this carefully designed space is placed at the heart of San Cristóbal, providing a welcoming retreat to start and end your days. Sculptures and paintings by artist Juan Martínez Parente fill each space with personality, from the hallways to the warm, welcoming rooms, equipped with bath amenities by Loredana, textiles from Camino de los Altos, and even record players to set the mood. After a day of strolling around town, head back for an in-suite massage, followed by a glass of wine by the outdoor fireplace.

Tarumba // Deeply rooted in tradition and yet incredibly creative, a meal at Tarumba (placed inside Sombra del Agua hotel) is an immersion into some of the lesser-known flavors and culinary traditions of Chiapas. Chef Jorge Gordillo’s inspiring tasting menu is charged with stories, each dish evoking a moment, a person, or a local custom. The cocktails, by Cristina Martínez, are just as enchanting, most of them made with pox (a local corn-based spirit). Dinner is also available à la carte, but nothing beats sitting at the chef’s table.

Tierra y Cielo // Proud ambassadors of Chiapas cuisine, chefs Marta Zepeda and Kievf Rueda (who also happen to be married) have been at the helm of this beloved restaurant for nearly two decades. Set in a charming colonial house, Tierra y Cielo offers an extensive menu that celebrates the state’s unique cuisine, including a handful of themed tasting menus like Sabores de Chiapas. Not to be missed: the house quesadillas and mole coleto, a San Cristóbal classic, best paired with a glass or two of Mexican wine.

Cocoliche // Laid-back and unpretentious, Cocoliche is one of those places you may end up visiting more than once when you come to San Cristóbal. The eclectic space is cute, the staff is super friendly, and the menu is varied enough to offer new options each time you stop by, ranging from huge salads and pasta dishes to green curry and grilled arrachera, with live music filling the air almost every evening.

Sarajevo Café Jardín // One of the most charming venues in San Cristóbal –and an excellent option for a laptop-and-coffee session–, this plant-filled space is a favorite for breakfast and lunch, serving healthier options like quinoa pancakes and tuna bowls to the sound of live piano and relaxed conversation. As the afternoon progresses, happy hour (from 6:00 to 9:00 PM) brings budget-friendly cocktails and, on weekends, DJs spinning tunes.

Where to Drink

Poshería // A San Cristóbal icon since 2010, Poshería started as the city’s first pox tasting room – a colorful, whimsical space to discover the secrets behind this sweet and slightly smoky corn-based spirit, profoundly tied to Chiapas’ traditions and customs. Its name means “medicine” in the Tzotzil Maya language, and after a couple of sips, you may discover why. Try it neat, paired with coffee-dusted orange slices, or in lower-ABV flavored liquors, including vanilla, chocolate, and coffee.

Histórico Tostador // Imagined by the team behind the legendary Finca Hamburgo, one of Chiapas’ top coffee producers since 1888, this gorgeous complex is dedicated to all things coffee. Here, you’ll find a house roaster, a lovely cafe, a bar, and a bakery, as well as a restaurant – get the grilled cheese! – and even a plant nursery. Aspiring baristas and caffeine aficionados of all experience levels can partake in workshops and tastings with the team of experts.

Cafeología // Founded by Jesús Salazar, better known as Cafeólogo, this cozy space is part of a decades-long project designed to promote Chiapas coffee, creating fair conditions for everyone involved, from producers and baristas to distributors. Stop by for a fantastic flat white and a pastry, or enjoy a full breakfast before heading out to explore. A bag of coffee beans –each featuring the name and face of its producer – will make for a perfect souvenir.

Where to Explore

San Juan Chamula // About a 30-minute drive from San Cristóbal, this town is an immersion in Chiapas’ mysticism and intricate blend of cultures and religions. As an autonomous Tzotzil Maya village, San Juan Chamula has its own government and police, with around 80,000 citizens who remain fiercely resistant and independent. The ultimate expression of the town’s unique spirit hides within its church, where Mayan beliefs intersect with Catholicism, and copal smoke wafts over dozens and dozens of candles.

Cañón del Sumidero // One of Chiapas’ many natural wonders, this stunning canyon, set within the national park of the same name, rises over the Grijalva River, with imposing walls as high as 1,000 meters. Board a boat tour from Embarcadero Cahuaré (about an hour-long drive from San Cristóbal) and sail among waterfalls and intriguing rock formations, spotting endemic birds, crocodiles, and even spider monkeys along the way. If hiking is your thing, there are several trails within the park that lead to beautiful lookouts.

Na Bolom // Set in a neoclassical building from the late nineteenth century, this museum – whose name means “house of the jaguar” – was purchased in 1950 by Danish archaeologist Frans Blom and photographer Trudy Duby Blom, who dedicated their lives to researching the lives of the Lacandona people and fighting against the deforestation that threatened their livelihood. Na Bolom also features a library, a restaurant, a hotel, and a plant nursery designed to support reforestation projects across Chiapas’ indigenous communities.

Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya // Housed inside the sixteenth-century building that was once the Convent of Santo Domingo, this gorgeous space is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich textile traditions of the Maya world. The extensive collection features more than 2,500 pieces, spanning regions like Tabasco, Chiapas, and Yucatán in Mexico, as well as Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Beautiful displays and comprehensive information make this museum a true treat if you want to learn more about the Maya’s endless knowledge and traditions.

Tiger Club founders Jonathan and Clémentine made the dream a reality, serving flavor-packed Southeast Asian specialties on a laid-back patio in downtown La Paz. Creations like ginger yellowtail ssäm and biang biang noodles pair wonderfully with their selection of natural wines and craft beer. Before or after dinner, check out the Mexican design selection at Casa Nopal, set in the same house.

Nemi // If you’re planning on having one special dinner during your La Paz stay, this is where you want it to happen. Helmed by Chef Alexis Villagomez, the kitchen at this intimate downtown eatery offers some of the most inventive and delicious food in town. Based on the freshest seasonal ingredients, the tasting menu changes constantly, featuring surprises like lobster with red rice, New York with sweet potato and black garlic demi, and miso-zarandeado shrimp (my favorite). Mexican wines are carefully selected to harmonize with each bite.

Mariscos El Tigre // Oysters the size of your palm, gigantic seafood cocktails, and crispy pescadillas are just a few of the many reasons to visit this legendary seafood joint in Colonia Guerrero, doling out fresh-from-the-sea delights. A local favorite since 1994, this spacious, no-frills spot welcomes you with an extensive menu, generous portions, and friendly vibes, with tables populated by families, couples, friends, and anyone in the mood for a maritime feast. Our recommendation: arrive early, grab a table, and get lots of dishes to share.

Oyster House // Freshness is the name of the game at this shrine to all things oyster, placed right on the lively Malecón. From a dozen raw beauties to a fried oyster sandwich, all the way to a revitalizing michelada topped with a raw bivalve, this eatery is committed to shelling out (pun intended) the best of the best, sourced from the Bendito Mar regenerative aquaculture project. Other menu highlights: soft shell crab tacos and fish sashimi.

Where to Drink

Cuatro Altos // Morning cups of coffee and bagels make this pretty spot, outfitted in green tiles and brass details, a perfect starting point before a day of adventures. As the day progresses, stronger creations beckon –many of which promise to keep your caffeine buzz strong, like the Jalisquillo, a tequila-based espresso martini. If you don’t want your sleep disrupted, opt for the Fancy Paloma, with grilled pineapple, or the Frozen Aperol Spritz. Check their Instagram account for fun happenings like salsa lessons and karaoke nights.

Uno Bar // Nostalgia rules at this hip bar in downtown La Paz, with DJs spinning retro tunes on vinyl under the sparkle of a disco ball. Music also inspires the original cocktails, such as the Don’t Let Me Down (date-infused mezcal, corn, coconut, orange, cacao bitters, salted orange) and the Imagine (vodka and berry liqueur, aqua faba, housemade lychee liqueur), paired with bar bites like pizza, hand rolls, and fries. Double the fun and combo your evening with a stop at 612 Rooftop upstairs –preferably at sunset.

Black Marlin Brewing Company // One of the many reasons to love Baja is its craft beer scene, and this chill brewery is proof. A perfect pit stop on hot La Paz afternoons, Black Marlin offers a selection of house creations on tap, such as the tropical Coastal Dream, with hints of pineapple and coconut, and the Tesoro, a citrusy Hazy Double IPA. Founders Michel, Hiram, and Vivian are also known and loved for Blue Fin Poke Co. and the Pacific Brew tap room.

Where to Explore

Whale Watching // Few adventures are as exciting (and humbling) as seeing whales in their habitat. Every year, grey whales make their way to Baja to mate and nurse their young, and the waters near La Paz are among your best bets for a close –yet respectful– encounter. To watch these stunning mammals swim, jump, and perhaps come close to your boat to say hi (please don’t touch them!), book a tour with a certified company. We recommend the super-professional, knowledgeable teams at Baja Desconocida and Baja Adventure Co.

Sandboarding on the Mogote Dunes // A sand barrier separating the desert from the sea, El Mogote feels slightly otherworldly, with its shapeshifting sand dunes and seemingly endless extension. This is the setting for one of the most fun adventures in the area: sliding down the dunes on a sandboard. Balance and decently strong legs are all you need to glide smoothly as you admire the surrounding landscape, and if you fall, sand ensures a pretty soft landing.

Playa Balandra // Deservedly nicknamed “Mexico’s most beautiful beach,” and perhaps the most recognizable corner of La Paz, this tranquil beach is a favorite spot for kayaking, paddleboarding, or just plain chilling. Its clear, shallow waters make exploring easy, with water in the deepest sections only reaching chest height. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Natural Protected Area, access to Balandra is controlled by CONANP, which limits the number of visitors each day. Make sure to purchase your pass on the CONANP website well in advance.

Swimming with Whale Sharks // The largest living sharks in the world, these magnificent fish make their way to the shores off La Paz every year between October and April, feeding on its plankton-rich waters. If this is on your bucket list, La Paz has some of the best regulations in the world, ensuring only 56 boats go out each day to avoid crowding the whale sharks. Swim next to these gentle (and surprisingly fast!) giants with legit operators like Baja Adventure Co.

This week, we are excited to share three incredible Mexican projects that could exist only thanks to the vision and energy of those who imagined them: a beloved hotel in Playa del Carmen, a chic linen brand, and a stunning aquarium with a story to tell.

Let’s Chat: Alexis Scharer, Co-Owner of Hotel La Semilla in Playa del Carmen

La Semilla is not your typical beach hotel. Lovingly decorated by owners Alexis and Angie Scharer, checking into this Playa del Carmen hotel feels like arriving at your friends’ home – unpretentious, relaxed, and with a big heart. Cristina Alonso talked to Alexis about his calling in hospitality, why he and Angie fell in love with the Riviera Maya, and why their faith in the destination remains strong.

Cristina: What brought you to the world of hospitality?

Alexis: I was born in Switzerland, and my family has been involved in hospitality for generations – my dad is a hotelier, and my grandfather ran a restaurant and butcher shop. My parents actually met in a hotel in Bern. Because of my dad’s work, we lived in Greece and Peru, where my mother is from. Hospitality is literally in my DNA, and since I was a teen, I have loved working in the kitchen or as a bellboy; I was fascinated by the adrenaline rush. Of course, I studied Hospitality Management in Geneva, and I worked all over the world: Switzerland, London, Spain, the Caribbean, and New York, where I met Angie.

Cristina: How did the two of you end up choosing the Mexican Caribbean for your project?

Alexis: We arrived in Playa del Carmen in 2007, so it was a whole different Playa back then, and Tulum was truly something out of a movie: the spectacular turquoise sea, cabins, hammocks… We fell in love with this place, and after a couple of years working on other projects, we knew it was time to venture out on our own. We found the plot where La Semilla is today; it was a garden with a small building. We renovated it, and we opened La Semilla in December 2013. Three years later, we had the opportunity to expand, and we opened Villa La Semilla in Bahía Solimán, near Tulum.

When we got here, we couldn’t believe how beautiful the beaches were. But we were also really attracted to Maya culture. Walking among the Tulum ruins or swimming in a cenote – it made us feel immersed in nature.

Cristina: The Riviera Maya is one of Mexico's most beloved destinations, but it has also faces challenges. How do you and the team navigate that?

Alexis: Security has always been a conversation topic in Mexico. Things vary from one region to another, and there are good times and not-so-good times, but overall, things have been under control in this region. For example, I’m half-Peruvian, and there are some safety issues there, but I think travelers know that, when they go to places like these, they just need to be a little extra careful. Sargassum, though, has now become an international problem; the entire Caribbean is experiencing this. President Sheinbaum was here last week, and it looks like the government has a major plan to collect sargassum on the open sea. Because when you collect it from the sand, you’re also using machinery that erodes the beach. I’m no expert, but I’ve heard about studies on potentially using it as biofuel, which could be great.

I believe that every crisis brings an opportunity. For example, I think this is a chance for us to look at places like Holbox, which is still very pristine, and realize we can’t exploit it. There’s another place I love, El Cuyo, and the people there are very fierce about caring for their land, avoiding massive construction. As for the team and me, we are doing what we can. At the villa, we make sure everything is flawless, because we can’t control the sea, but we can control what happens on property. I’m also part of a group of owners who are building a sargassum barrier in Solimán Bay

Cristina: What are your hopes for the Riviera Maya?

Alexis: I’m always very optimistic. We can’t depend only on our faith, though –we have to take action. As a society, as hoteliers, and as professionals, we have to be much more conscious about sustainable growth. Development doesn’t have to mean destruction. We have to plant trees; we have to take care of the water and the energy we consume. At this point, it’s unacceptable for a self-proclaimed eco-hotel to change guests’ towels every day or to offer plastic bottles. Things can get tough from time to time, but I still have faith.

Design We Love: Cardo Santo

Inspired by the wild beauty of Baja California, every linen piece by Cardo Santo feels like an invitation to leave everything behind and go where the desert meets the sea. “Cardo Santo is a flower with medicinal powers, so I felt like that feeling translates to linen: it protects you, it’s very free and generous,” says founder Fernanda Sela. 100% linen and gender-neutral, Cardo Santo’s kimono-style robes are as light as they are versatile, perfect as swimwear cover-ups, loungewear, or even over jeans. Architecture: Gran Acuario Mazatlán, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio

Famously nicknamed “the Aquarium of the World” by Jacques Cousteau, the Sea of Cortez is one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. This extraordinary setting inspired Gran Acuario Mazatlán, an imposing concrete building whose walls seem to rise like rocks and reefs, with surrounding greenery evoking the feeling of a ruin gorgeously engulfed by nature. Envisioned by Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, the building was completed in 2023 with a clear mission: to promote conservation and resilience, and remind us of our role on this planet. As the largest aquarium in Latin America, the space features more than 25 habitats for guests to explore, populated by sharks, rays, and jellyfish. –CA

Casa Habita // A Grupo Habita icon, Casa Habita has been one of Colonia Lafayette’s hippest neighbors for more than a decade. Under the creative vision of Milan-based Dimore Studio, the property comprises a house from the forties and a contemporary building, resulting in spaces that are charmingly vintage yet decidedly modern. The restaurant is especially gorgeous, with its green-and-gold hues and retro bar. The equally stylish guest rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows that invite in plenty of natural light.

Bellwort Hotel // Concrete, leather, and thoughtful touches of art make every corner of this adult-only hotel irresistibly photogenic –a sexy, industrial escape in the leafy Colonia Lafayette. Sleek decor and generous spaces await across its suites, some of which feature balconies with lovely views of the neighborhood. Catch some rays by the outdoor pool – a blessing during those hot Jalisco springs and summers – and make sure to check out Erizo de Mar, the excellent seafood restaurant next door.

Casa Bosque Eduviges // A treat for architecture lovers, this enchanting Colonia Americana retreat seamlessly blends past and present. With a restored early twentieth-century mansion as its centerpiece, a testament to the era’s French-inspired style, architects Sergio Ortiz and Juan Antonio Ángel Ramírez incorporated a modern building, creating a lovely dialogue between eras. Rest in welcoming rooms with warm wood-and-textile details, and start each day with a cup of coffee in the tranquil gardens before heading out to explore.

Where to Eat

Alcalde // Seasonality sets the tone at this iconic eatery, led by Guadalajara-born (and equally iconic) Chef Paco Ruano, whose stints in legendary European kitchens influenced his passion for fresh ingredients and precise technique. Products like mushrooms and herbs make each step of the 10-course tasting menu a delightful surprise – you might get to taste an aguachile beef tartare, duck with mole, or mushroom flan. But perhaps the best surprise is the relaxed, lively atmosphere, bringing a much-welcome breath of fresh air to the fine dining experience.

PalReal // There’s always a good excuse to visit this laid-back eatery in Colonia Americana. Mornings bring strong coffee (brewed with Mexican beans) and eggs bathed in mole, while dishes like tomato tartare and a fabulous milanesa, paired with a solid selection of natural wines, await for lunch and dinner. My favorite moment, though, is the early evening: I love grabbing a seat in the leafy terrace, ordering the excellent Negroni, and just soaking in the Tapatío vibes.

Xokol // A mystical cave-like space; a long, communal table, and colorful cobs of corn hanging from the ceiling – Xokol is a treat for the senses from the moment you walk in. Under the leadership of chefs Óscar Segundo and Xrysw Ruelas Díaz, every bite at Xokol is a tribute to corn, expressed through a weekly-rotating menu packed with imagination and a touch of whimsy. Available as a tasting menu or à la carte, the selection may include creations like cauliflower with Otomí almond mole or octopus with fermented milk. The impressive wine list and original cocktail selection make pairing incredibly fun.

Tortas Ahogadas el Profe Jiménez // One of Guadalajara’s greatest gifts to mankind, tortas ahogadas are, quite literally, drowned tortas: a carnitas-stuffed birote roll drenched in spicy salsa. At this legendary stand, every element shines as it should: the birote is crispy, the meat – choose from options like carnitas and rib – is juicy, and the salsa is spicy enough to bring the heat while making you want more. And while the torta is the main draw, you’d be missing out if you don’t order at least one taco de carnitas.

Where to Drink

Mecenas // Call it ambition, obsession, or perhaps a little bit of both. It was a desire for total control over quality that led the team at Mecenas –helmed by chef José Luis Hinostroza and head bartender Arturo Santos – to make this Colonia Americana bar a full DIY experience. Here, everything from the liqueurs and fortified wines is made in-house, while spirits are produced in partnership with local distilleries. The result: concoctions like the Monje, made with housemade green Chartreuse, pineapple tepache eau de vie, and a drop of lemongrass oil.

El Gallo Altanero // Few places have captured my heart like this temple of all things agave. Led by Freddy Andreasson, Swedish by birth but fully Tapatío by conviction, El Gallo holds an impressive collection of indie spirits, from tequila and mezcal to raicilla and bacanora. The cocktail selection is just as exciting, featuring seasonal creations like a plum highball or mango martini. Loud, lively, and unpretentious, the atmosphere will grant you some of your most fun Guadalajara nights.

De La O // If, like me, you appreciate the art of day drinking, this hip cantina is the place for you. Under the “guadalatiki” banner, De La O shakes up the best of both worlds: local cantina tradition with irresistible tiki flavors. Case in point: the Pepita Tequila Mai Tai, made with pumpkin seed orgeat. The menu also features classics, drinks inspired by the Mexican Revolution, and excellent zero-proof options. For best results, pair with a carnitas taco or a juicy lonche de cochinita.

Pare de Sufrir // The message here is clear: stop suffering, drink mezcal. A local favorite for nearly two decades, Pare de Sufrir is a paradise for mezcal lovers, with 70+ labels behind the bar, including Mezonte, a traditional mezcal project founded by Pare owner Pedro Jiménez. From Thursday to Sunday, sway under the disco ball to the irresistible beats of salsa, cumbia, and other tropical sounds, courtesy of an eclectic roster of DJs.

Where to Explore

Museo Cabañas // Founded in the nineteenth century as a hospice for orphans and the elderly – many people still call it Hospicio Cabañas – this cultural center is housed in a beautiful building designed by architect Manuel Tolsá. Rotating exhibitions and a thriving activity calendar keep visitors coming back again and again, but it’s the Capilla Mayor, alive with José Clemente Orozco’s extraordinary murals, that makes it a must-visit for anyone visiting the city.

Tlaquepaque // Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Guadalajara, this charming town is bustling with color and creativity, thanks to its diverse community of artisans and creators. Stroll down Andador Independencia, where historic mansions have been converted into workshops and galleries –from pottery and jewelry to painting and sculpture. One of my favorites: Del Corazón de la Tierra, with an extensive selection of crafts from Mexico and Guatemala.

Teatro Degollado // Of Mexico’s countless gorgeous historic centers, Guadalajara’s has to be one of the prettiest. One of its many wonders is this theater, a neoclassical architectural treasure from the nineteenth century. With its stunning portico, graced by the nine muses of ancient Greece, and its imposing concert hall, featuring a mural depicting Dante’s Divine Comedy, the building itself is worth a visit. Catching a performance by the Jalisco Philharmonic, though, will make the visit truly unforgettable.

Art Gallery Tour // Guadalajara’s thriving contemporary art scene is a reflection of the city’s rich cultural heritage and fearless creative present. The exciting landscape includes galleries like Tiro al Blanco, dedicated to promoting dialogue through art; Palma Galería, focused on emerging artists whose work speaks of their cultural context; and Guadalajara 90210, where experimental creation takes center stage.

Let’s Chat: Pedro Reyes, Food Journalist & Taco Pro on the Mexico City Taco Scene

Mexico City has always been a taco mecca, but something has happened over the past few years. There are more taquerías than ever: some are fancy, most are very photo-friendly, and many of them have people who are willing to spend hours in line for a bite. Cristina Alonso chats with Pedro Reyes, food journalist and one of the partners at Tacos Domingo, to dive into the current scene.

Cristina: We’re going through something of a taco renaissance in Mexico City. How would you explain this?

Pedro: During the pandemic, a lot of taco-related content became very popular. A very specific example is The Taco Chronicles on Netflix. That show gave visibility to street tacos in all shapes and forms: carnitas, guisado, hard shell, barbacoa… it gave people a great perspective on taco culture. Around that same time, Mexico City started welcoming more and more foreigners who fell in love with tacos - diverse, accessible, and affordable. They tried tacos they’d never had before and were fascinated.

I also want to highlight the Orinoco factor. This taquería opened and brought two things: first, it gave foreigners the peace of mind that comes with eating tacos in a clean, easy-to-understand place; while for Mexicans, it offered excellent, thoughtful branding. This made Mexicans think, “Oh, that’s what works. We need to serve tacos with genuine, contemporary branding.” So, for better or for worse, the landscape became Orinoco-ized. There are a bunch of taquerías that are leaning hard on that kind of branding to succeed.

Cristina: There are also some genuinely good spots.

Pedro: Definitely. This chain of events also inspired a group of chefs who know how to make elevated tacos – places like Siembra, La Once Mil, or even Comal Oculto, which isn’t necessarily a taquería but serves an excellent corn-based menu. I’m also very happy with taquerías that prioritize corn, use it well, and focus on traceability, like Maizajo, Milpa, and, again, Siembra and Comal Oculto. They are taking corn to the next level.

It’s interesting because some people still fight back against “expensive” tacos. La Once Mil, for example, is known to be pricier, but they have an incredible product; it’s a fantastic, well-executed idea. I don’t think tacos should necessarily be cheap. I celebrate all of this because I think the scene allows us to have better tacos. We still have the all-time favorites, plus so many new options.

Cristina: We’re also seeing a huge increase in norteño-style tacos. How did that happen?

Pedro: Overall, northern culture has become increasingly popular across the country, and Orinoco is, in fact, part of that (it started in Monterrey). The first concept I was really excited about was Los Caramelos, a stand in Roma Sur serving beef barbacoa, which we didn’t have a lot of before. Then came Gonzalitos, with tacos regios mañaneros (morning tacos). I celebrate this moment we are living in, because the more taquerías we have, the more chances we have for maybe four or five of them to become classics.​

Crisitna: What are some of your favorite taco spots nobody should miss?

Pedro: I really like El Jarocho, in Roma. It started as a tortillería and has become a great guisado taquería. I like the carnitas tacos at El Venadito, El Cherán, and El Rincón Tarasco. Selene, in Polanco, has great al pastor tacos. I also love their volcanes. For a good suadero, I go to Tacos Charly in San Fernando. Downtown Mexico City is also home to excellent spots like Ricos Tacos Toluca. I love El Turix, which serves very Chilango-style but delicious cochinita pibil, and El Huequito, one of the pioneers of al pastor tacos.

Cristina: Where does Tacos Domingo exist in this taco landscape?

Pedro: Tacos Domingo sprouted from the many trips my partners and I took while working on our taco guides, Guía Domingo. We’ve published guides for Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Monterrey. Our goal is to elevate the timeless taco al carbón (charcoal-grilled taco), and we have four locations right now: two in Mexico City, one in Monterrey, and one in New York City, which we just opened. I love Tacos Domingo because of its simplicity: the product is great, and we have incredible salsas.

Design We Love: Fábrica La Aurora, San Miguel de Allende

It’s a pipe dream of mine – and many others: owning one of those gorgeous houses in downtown San Miguel de Allende and furnishing it with all sorts of wonders from Fábrica La Aurora. A textile factory for more than nine decades, this beautiful design center is now home to an incredible selection of art galleries, antique shops, decor boutiques, and workshops, showcasing the work of local and international creators. Some favorites: the Italian linens at La Bottega di Casa, the whimsical home design pieces at Mestiz, and the bold contemporary art at La 101. – CA

Casa Files: Casa Bernal, Bernal, Querétaro

One of the tallest monoliths in the world, Peña de Bernal is not only visually imposing – it’s a sacred site for the Otomí-Chichimeca peoples and an energetic center for many who visit the town of Bernal. Within this magnificent setting, Emmanuel Picault (founder of architecture and design studio Chic by Accident) designed this brutalist retreat, harmoniously interacting with the ruins of a colonial mansion and the surrounding nature. Sunlight-filled spaces and simple lines are enhanced with details like art pieces from the Chic by Accident gallery and earthenware by Perla Valtierra. The centerpiece: the pool, surrounded by towering cacti and framed by views of the majestic Peña. You can book this house with CasitaMX. –CA

The Magnificent Greenhouse Restaurant in Tepoztlán That Isn’t Artificial Intelligence

Speaking of food, I spent the weekend with my Mom in Tepoztlán (a pueblo mágico 90 minutes from CDMX), where, via word of mouth, I indulged in a late lunch at a restaurant recommended by a Chilango friend (and validated by Cristina). I knew it would be beautiful from its Instagram page, but I wasn’t ready for how breathtaking it turned out to be. It’s called Margarita Concept Garden, tucked behind the town’s main thoroughfare, which leans authentic: artisanal jewelry, hand-painted signs promising temazcal in makeshift backyards, and family-run restaurants with a lively host or hostess outside, cajoling pedestrians to come try their homemade dishes.

Google Maps directed me up an ascending road with a sharp curve behind the town’s main drag. I became befuddled, convinced the restaurant was somewhere else entirely while my phone’s location stayed janky. Then it hit 2:00pm - opening time - and I watched a few people climb a staircase carved into a derelict cement wall. That, I quickly learned, was the entrance.

At the top, a hostess greeted us and ushered my mother and me from a small dark space, into a gardenscape that looked like it had been generated by artificial intelligence. On the right, open-air pockets of shrubbery and flowers, each one encircling its own small dining table, with Tepoztlán’s distant, magical mountains backdropping it all. On the left, a greenhouse overrun with verdant plants spooling out of pots and earth, grounded by a single path slicing down the middle. Pendant lights drooped down, blending in with all the fauna. A hanging disco ball shimmered at the walkway’s end, just another example of how this restaurant kept on delivering nuggets of unexpected design. The hostess sat us under a canopy of trees that formed a nook at the back.

It’s vegetarian, and my favorite items were the Caramelized Peach Salad (that peach was so juicy I’d bet it was plucked within the hour) and the Carnitas Soy-Confit Tacos with Rice Chicharrón. I had a mocktail by the name of Root & Flower - a hibiscus infusion with ginger, honey, and fresh lime. Each cocktail promised homegrown herbs.

Yes, the food was tasty. But the setting was a ten out of ten. If you’re heading to Tepoztlán any time soon, I’d secure a lunch reservation here in advance. -BB

​I have to admit it took me a while to visit Tulum. It didn’t happen until around 2016, so I know I didn’t get to experience its earliest, hippiest iteration –the one many say they miss. I’ve been back a few times since then, though, and I’m lucky enough to have a couple of good friends who live there, so I’ve been able to see the spots that maintain that very special Tulum essence: places with unique personalities, gorgeous design, and tons of style. Most of all, I love that Tulum is immersed in the magic of the Mayan jungle, with its cenotes, its ruins, and its mysticism –and that will never change. Let’s get into it!

Esencia // Strictly speaking, Esencia isn’t in Tulum, yet its 30-minute distance from downtown Tulum still makes it an easy option – and an iconic one, at that. Located on the clear beaches of Xpu Ha, this spectacular 50-acre property was once an Italian duchess’s beach house, and its storied style and sophistication still fill the air today. With only 51 suites and four villas, space and privacy are unmatched. The crown jewel might just be its Health Club, featuring a gym, outdoor yoga deck, tennis courts, and a stunning Maya-inspired spa.​

Nomade Temple Tulum // With self-discovery at its core, this stylishly designed beach hotel welcomes you with generous programming, ranging from wellness-focused activities such as fascia movement classes and meditation sessions to artistic workshops led by resident creators. Three dining outlets keep things interesting: Kuu Jū, serving Japanese fare; Macondo, serving Mediterranean food with a side of live music; and the beachfront La Popular. Rest in effortlessly cool rooms outfitted in concrete, wood, and stylish textiles; cozy treehouses floating above the canopy, or ample suites with private pools.

Our Habitas Tulum // The first member of the Our Habitas family, this adult-only retreat is perfectly situated in Zona Hotelera yet feels private and secluded. Its community-centered concept means you’ll find plenty to do on property, including complimentary daily activities like yoga, movie nights, and Drink & Draw sessions. Designed to leave a minimal footprint in the environment, rooms feature canvas walls, palapa roofs, outdoor showers, and welcoming wooden decks. Carve time for a locally inspired wellness experience, like a traditional Mexican sobada with herbs, balms, and a cotton rebozo wrap.

Hartwood // A Tulum favorite since 2010, this jungly eatery is the brainchild of Eric Werner and wife Mya Henry, who traded New York for the Riviera Maya and have earned a loyal following over the years. Built with ingredients from across the Yucatán Peninsula, including sustainably sourced fish and seafood, each dish on the daily-changing menu showcases the richness of local flavors and the touch of the wood-burning oven and grill. Wonders that may arrive at your table include smoked fish tlayuda, kale Caesar salad, and grilled catch of the day, best paired with an icy margarita.​

ARCA // Led by chef José Luis Hinostroza, ARCA is Mexican fine dining at its most creative and fun. Using seasonal ingredients sourced from local fishermen, farmers, and producers, the constantly rotating menu is a series of surprises. Stunningly presented creations may include crab esquites, roasted prawns, and soft-shell crab tacos, each bursting with flavor. For a truly special Tulum night, my recommendation is to grab a drink at the bar – the cocktails are just as inventive as the food - followed by the Chef’s tasting menu.

El Camello Jr. // It’s hard to picture a more craveable moment: ice-cold beer, fresh ceviche, creamy guacamole, and tons of chips. Make it a reality at this local favorite in downtown Tulum, a laid-back seafood joint where generous portions at budget-friendly prices await for lunch and dinner. Highlights include the deep-fried shrimp, grilled fish, and octopus ceviche, but you really can’t go wrong when the product is this good. Cash only.

Mestixa // Some places just capture your heart from the first minute, and this personality-packed restaurant in downtown Tulum is one of them. The fun decor mirrors the fearless menu, inspired by the street food traditions of Mexico and Asia. Explosions of flavor come in the form of creations like birria dumplings, crispy chicken baos, and avocado sandwiches. The drinks are equally delightful – try the Sake Cocotini, with sake, coconut oil-infused vodka, and housemade coconut horchata.

Where to Drink

The Roof Sunset Bar at Distrito Panamera // Not only is Distrito Panamera one of Tulum’s most deliciously Instagrammable boutique hotels, but it’s also home to a lovely rooftop bar that makes it easy to lose track of time. Both fans of classics and creative cocktails will find much to love here, from a timeless Hugo Spritz (made with St. Germain and prosecco) to a creative concoction like the Yum Melon (with gin, melon oil, apple, Calpis, and sparkling water). A few shareable bites and DJ beats round up the offerings.

Gitano Beach Club // Among Tulum’s many beach clubs, Gitano is the epitome of the destination’s relaxed yet chic vibes. Open from breakfast to dinner, it’s the perfect excuse to spend the day under the sun: from chilaquiles and Bloody Marys in the AM to fish tacos and mezcal-based cocktails – try the spicy Jungle Fever – as the day turns into night. Grab a daybed by the pool or on the sand, and catch some rays with a solid dose of people-watching.​

Papaya Playa Project // Saturday nights turn this beloved hotel into one of the most coveted dance floors in town. Under palm trees and disco balls, a roster of international DJs brings the night to life, with experimental artistic performances adding an element of surprise. Added perks like a Mayan dinner and free-flowing cocktails are available, as are room packages if you want to make a whole weekend out of it.

​Batey Mojito & Guarapo Bar // For more than 13 years, the divey Batey has been a go-to for live music and the most refreshing mojitos in town, made with sugar cane juice crushed in a kitschy converted vochito (or VW Beetle). From jazz to salsa to blues, an array of local and visiting bands fill the laid-back space with energy in the evenings, while daytime brings a chill vibe, perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a quick mid-day cocktail.

Where to Explore

Tulum Ruins // No matter how many times you’ve seen the photo, it’s impossible not to be in total awe when you see it live: the iconic El Castillo sitting on a cliff above the turquoise waters. While the Tulum ruins themselves may not be as imposing as, say, Chichén Itzá or Teotihuacán, the setting is absolutely stunning and yet another proof of the Maya’s extraordinary knowledge and dominance. I highly recommend visiting early in the morning, as walking around under the sun can be a bit of a challenge.

Cenotes // An impressive network of underwater caves that spans across the Yucatán Peninsula, cenotes are natural sinkholes that are as visually impressive as they are culturally significant, considered by the Maya to be the gateway to the underworld. The area is lined with gorgeous cenotes of all shapes and sizes, many of which are swimmable. One of my favorites is Jardín del Edén, a 30-minute drive from downtown Tulum. A large, open-air cenote, it’s not only gorgeous, but it’s responsibly managed –always a huge plus in the Mexzine book.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve // One of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve visited in Mexico, this sprawling reserve –and one of the largest protected areas in the country– is made up of mangroves, marshes, wetlands, and lagoons, providing a visual spectacle at every turn. Its name, fittingly, means “origin of the sky,” and it’s home to more than 300 bird species, as well as jaguars, pumas, manatees, and monkeys. Book a tour with Community Tours Sian Ka’an, a Maya-owned cooperative. Options range from leisurely two-hour boat rides –including a swim in the legendary sacred Maya canal– to immersive eight-hour experiences.

Let’s Chat: Karla Zazueta, author of the cookbook Norteña

It’s a long way from Ensenada to London. Baja-born Karla Zazueta has been representing Mexico in the UK for more than two decades, sharing traditions through cooking classes, supper clubs, and her cookbook Norteña, a celebration of the flavors of northern Mexico. Cristina Alonso chatted with Karla to learn more about her journey and what it means to be an ambassador for Mexican cuisine.

How did you end up cooking Mexican food in England?

“I was born in Ensenada and came to England 23 years ago through a teaching exchange program. I met my husband four months later, so here I am. I worked as a teacher for the first seven years, but I’ve always cooked. I come from a very big family. My mom is from Sinaloa and is one of 14 siblings, and my dad, who’s from Ensenada, has seven siblings. So both sides of my family were always big on cooking from scratch.

My first years here were hard because there was no such thing as Mexican food. People had a vague notion of what bad Tex-Mex was. After I had kids, I decided to stop teaching, and started writing a food blog in my free time. After that, things started to happen organically: I started hosting supper clubs in my house, offering cooking classes, and posting food photos on Instagram, which led to the book deal for Norteña. I think it’s the way it happens for a lot of people these days, with social media helping pave the way.”

Mexican food has gained much more international popularity over the past few years. How have things evolved for you?

“Ingredients have always been a challenge. I’ve learned how to search everywhere, from markets to Turkish stores. And I’ve learned to make many things myself. For example, for years I had to use feta because there were no Mexican cheeses here, but now I’ve learned to make queso fresco and panela myself. I make chorizo; I nixtamalize corn for tortillas. If you’d met me 23 years ago, you wouldn’t believe how much my cooking has evolved. And luckily, since Mexican food has gotten more popular here, you can find a good variety of dried chilies. We also have very good restaurants now, like Taquería Sonora and Fonda.”

Not a lot of people – not even Mexicans – are aware of what cocina norteña is. What does it mean to you to showcase it with your book?

“It’s very exciting for me to give it visibility. For a long time, it has had less representation than other cuisines, but it’s just as good and diverse, with a very strong identity. Growing up in Ensenada, I was surrounded by traditions, so this book is my personal tribute to my family history, and to share the way northern families eat.

My book is, of course, dedicated to my dad. He passed 17 years ago, and he was the soul of my family. He never needed an excuse to cook a carne asada. He loved being by the grill or in the kitchen. At breakfast, he was already talking about what we would have for lunch. Many of the recipes I included are his, the way he made them. I included his recipe for fish tacos. I also featured many Sinaloan recipes from my mom’s side, like Sinaloa-style tamales, which we make with a blend of shredded pork and beef, wrapped in dried corn husks.”

What are your favorite places to eat at when you come back to Mexico?

“We love going to Mexico City. And of course, we always go to Baja California. Some of my favorite spots are El Güero, a seafood cart in Ensenada; Tacos Manuel in Rosarito; and Leonardo’s, a breakfast place in San Antonio de las Minas near Valle de Guadalupe.”

I Swear by This Mexico Travel Hack

It's late afternoon, and I'm typing this from my hotel in Mexico City. I brought my mom here; it’s her first time in the capital. We landed this morning off a 5:01 am Aeroméxico flight from Tijuana, and the division of labor is now clear: I'm yawning, she's thriving, already lacing up to amble around Roma Norte while I operate sans slumber. One of us slept on that plane, and it wasn't me. I can't help it - I get too excited taking her to places I love this much to intermittently close my eyes.

So, touching on how I got here this morning - I’m about to reveal a secret hiding in plain sight at the San Diego-Tijuana border: a penny-saving bridge that oozes efficiency. From what I have gathered, nothing close to it exists elsewhere in the world. Cross Border Xpress - CBX - is a skybridge that transports you directly from the U.S. side of the border into Tijuana’s well-kept airport. Park in San Diego (or get dropped off via bus or Uber), scan your ticket, show your passport and boarding pass, then walk across. Five minutes later, you’re airside in Mexico.

Why it matters: TIJ, or General Abelardo L. Rodríguez International Airport (if you want to be official), flies deep into Mexico in a way San Diego never will. Direct routes to Oaxaca, Mérida, Guadalajara, La Paz, and CDMX - at domestic Mexican fares, because Volaris treats Tijuana as a hub. I’ve seen round-trip tickets to Mazatlán for less than two days’ worth of groceries from Whole Foods.

Having grown up in San Diego, the CBX bridge is my favorite travel hack. It’s $31.99 one way (to be honest, they keep raising the price little by little every year, which is annoying, but in the grand scheme of things, it remains a wallet-friendly trick).

The hack, distilled: if you’re in Southern California and headed to Mexico, stop searching for LAX. Search TIJ, book CBX, and walk to your gate in another country. It’s a massive cheat code, to say the least. -BB

Mercado Dive: Mercado Jamaica, Mexico City

If you’re anything like me, there are few better mood-boosters than fresh flowers. If that’s the case, this massive Mexico City market might just be the best kind of therapy. Located southeast of the city’s Centro Histórico, Mercado de Jamaica features around 1,200 stalls selling more than 5,000 flower varieties hailing from places like Puebla, Michoacán, and the State of Mexico. Towering sunflowers, aromatic roses, and bright lilies are among the countless flowers you can find here, whether you’re looking to create an arrangement or simply surround yourself with beauty. Make sure to come hungry: the market is home to fantastic food stalls like Huaraches Rossy and Elotes y Esquites Estrada. –CA

I’ve been counting the days to write about Oaxaca, one of my absolute favorite places on this planet. Oaxaca perfectly encapsulates everything that makes this country so incredible: from archaeological sites, beautiful crafts, and contemporary art, to extraordinary cuisine and, of course, mezcal. Most of all, I love the fact that Oaxacans are deeply proud of their state, and they work hard to keep its culture thriving.

Where to Stay

Casa Santo Origen // If you want to be close to downtown Oaxaca without being in it, Casa Santo Origen offers a break with its San Felipe location, a 15-minute drive from the action. Tranquil and welcoming, the hotel features eight spacious suites, each inspired by a different Oaxacan region, like Istmo and Costa. A lovely outdoor pool – perfect for cooling down on those hot Oaxaca days – and a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, Entre Sombras, give you two solid excuses to take a break in between city explorations.

Grana B&B // Set in a restored eighteenth-century casona, Grana may bear the name B&B, but has expanded its offerings over the years, becoming one of the loveliest and warmest boutique stays in town. Its 14 rooms range from cozy and compact to luxuriously spacious, with living areas and standalone tubs. Downstairs, the seriously gorgeous kitchen welcomes you for a hearty Oaxacan breakfast each morning, as well as happy hour sips and complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day.

Otro Oaxaca // Standing right by the Santo Domingo church, Otro Oaxaca stuns with its design, courtesy of architect Joâo Boto Caeiro, from the second you step in. Imposing Brutalist structures draw inspiration from Oaxacan treasures, like Mitla and Santo Domingo, making all 16 suites and common areas as inspiring as the city itself. The underground spa offers indigenous-inspired treatments and a cenote-like immersion pool, while the rooftop – a Grupo Habita trademark – is ideal for a sunset cocktail.

Casa Antonieta // A lovely hideaway in downtown Oaxaca, this boutique hotel is housed inside a restored sixteenth-century house, once part of the neighboring San Pablo Convent complex. The classic main courtyard serves as the centerpiece – leafy and relaxing, it’s perfect for a cup of coffee in the morning from the excellent Muss Café, while the rooftop awaits with glasses of natural wine in the afternoon. Styled with local textiles and rattan headboards, the ground-floor suites face the courtyard, while the upstairs rooms offer views of the leafy terrace.

Where to Eat

Alfonsina // Teaming up with his mother, Elvia, chef Jorge León opened this extraordinary restaurant in his family home back in 2018 and named it after his grandmother. From a delicate fish with mole to a hearty barbacoa taco, everything is made with seasonal, responsibly sourced ingredients, resulting in a beautifully honest and always surprising menu, ideally paired with low-intervention wines or fantastic artisanal mezcals. The team’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the kitchen, with practices like a rainwater-collecting system, dry compost bathrooms, and a strict no-plastic policy.

Crudo // The concept of Crudo may sound odd at first: a blend of Oaxacan flavors and Japanese techniques. Yet by the first few bites, you’re bound to be convinced by the brilliance of chef Ricardo Arellano’s creations. While the bar serves an à la carte menu, I highly recommend booking a spot at the Chef’s Private Room or La Casa, where an omakase experience promises to surprise you from beginning to end.

La Cocina de Humo // Led by chef Thalía Barrios, of the equally excellent Levadura de Olla, La Cocina de Humo is not so much a restaurant as it is an intimate celebration of the culinary traditions of Sierra Sur, where chef Thalía is from. Sitting in an open kitchen, you’ll be treated to a generous feast cooked with regional ingredients and deep respect for tradition, feeling as if you’d been welcomed into someone’s home. Choose between lunch or dinner, or try your culinary skills during a cooking class.

Pasillo de Humo // The name itself is a promise: “the smoke corridor.” A highlight of the bustling Mercado 20 de Noviembre, this section is dedicated to all things grilled, with a series of stalls doling out specialties like chorizo, cecina (salted, air-fried beef), and tasajo (thinly sliced, cured beef) with sides like grilled onions, nopales, and a healthy dose of tortillas. Grab one of the communal tables, and delight in the art of creating your own tacos –smelling like smoke for the rest of the day is totally worth it.

Where to Drink

La Mezcaloteca // If there’s one place I never miss when I go to Oaxaca, it is La Mezcaloteca. In 2010, this mezcal library was founded with a clear mission: promoting artisanal, non-commercial mezcal and the maestros mezcaleros who produce it. Available by reservation only, your journey here will be completely personalized, led by a pro who will select mezcals (and other agave delights, like sotol or bacanora) that suit your taste profile and spark your curiosity.

Sabina Sabe // Named after iconic Oaxacan healer María Sabina, known for her work with psychedelic mushrooms, this laid-back bar celebrates mezcal and its mysticism. The best seat in the house, of course, is by the bar, where the team boasts an extensive selection of mezcal and other agave spirits from regions like Guerrero or Jalisco. The creative cocktail menu changes every six months or so, making the most of seasonal ingredients, while classics like the mezcal Negroni are a sure bet.

Selva // Stylish and lively, Selva is a prime spot for expertly crafted cocktails and people-watching. The menu, a sort of “choose your own adventure” affair, leads you along a selection that ranges from classics and martinis to highballs and zero-proof options, ensuring you land exactly where you need to. A couple of highlights? The Oaxaca Gibson with pitiona (a local aromatic bush) and the Miahuatlán, made with mezcal, oloroso sherry, Cynar, and shiitake mushrooms.

Los Amantes // Imagined by the team behind Los Amantes mezcal, this charming little mezcalería stands in the very heart of downtown, making it quite hard to avoid the temptation of walking in for a sip any time you’re strolling around the area. With eclectic decor, easygoing bartenders, and live music performances by Don Zenón and his guitar, the night flows to the rhythm of mezcal – and usually ends with you making a few new friends.

Where to Explore

Centro Cultural San Pablo // Once the first convent in Oaxaca, an architectural treasure from 1529, this cultural center is now one of the most fascinating corners in town. Under architects Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo’s vision, the damaged building was carefully restored and creatively refreshed with sleek additions that beautifully bring past and present together. Temporary exhibitions, workshops, and performances keep the calendar busy all year long.

Museo Textil de Oaxaca // Housed in a restored eighteenth-century house, this enchanting museum is dedicated to Oaxaca’s treasured textiles, as well as worldwide expressions of this craft. The expansive collection features textiles from Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, and Guatemala, available to students and researchers upon request. Intimate and easy to navigate, the museum features temporary exhibitions that not only showcase the beauty of textiles but also their role in different communities across time and place.

Palenque Tour // For many of us, mezcal is somewhat of a recent discovery –a liquid that got its much-deserved time in the spotlight perhaps a couple of decades ago. In reality, mezcal is deeply rooted in Oaxacan identity, a tradition transmitted across generations. There’s no better way to discover its nuances than going straight to the source: a tour of a production palenque. Distilleries like Hacienda Tradición offer guided tours, but my favorite experiences are led by Bakuza’s Remy Reyes, who leads soulful adventures that may also include stops at the market or even a secret waterfall.

Jardín Etnobiológico de Oaxaca // Led by legendary Oaxacan artist Francisco Toledo and the power of community among local society, this garden came into fruition: a place to preserve and share the state’s rich biodiversity. Donated by Oaxacan communities, more than 5,000 plants line the garden’s corridors today, from mountain plants to cacti to medicinal herbs. Across the garden, art interacts with nature, with sculptures by artists like Jorge Du Bon, Luis Zárate, and Toledo himself.

The New Power Trio Behind the Dining Experience at Kymaia in Puerto Escondido

Dining has been one of Kymaia’s main draws since it opened its doors in 2025, with a culinary program helmed by Chef Eduardo García of Máximo. Since May of this year, Chef Lalo has joined forces with Venezuelan-born Vanessa Franco and Andrés Trujillo, Máximo alums, and the creative minds behind La Bóveda restaurant at another Puerto favorite, Casona Sforza. Cristina Alonso chatted with the trio about this shared new culinary endeavor.

After working together at Máximo, what does this collaboration mean for you?

EG: “It’s so special. It represents a natural evolution of a relationship that began years ago. After watching them develop their own voices and build such solid projects, this is an opportunity to create from a place of trust and a shared vision.”

AT: “It means so much to us. Beyond having crossed paths professionally ages ago, it was a period that shaped the way we understand cooking and hospitality. At Máximo, we learned the importance of discipline, respect for the product, and doing this with honesty. Over time, we have each built our own path, so collaborating again today feels like meeting again at a new stage, with more experience and a more mature vision.”

VF: “It’s beautiful because the relationship has evolved. Back then, we were part of a team learning; today, there is much more horizontal exchange, where each person brings their own experience and sensitivity. There is a great deal of mutual respect. I think that naturally comes through in what we are building together.”

Vanessa and Andrés, you know Puerto Escondido well through your work with Casona Sforza. What new challenges and opportunities does the concept of Kymaia bring?

VF & AT: Puerto Escondido is going through a very interesting moment. It has grown enormously in recent years, and continues to find its identity and a balance between its roots, its local community, and the arrival of visitors from around the world. On one hand, there is access to extraordinary ingredients and a very close relationship with producers, fishermen, and cooks. At the same time, we feel that Puerto is still defining its identity and what it wants to represent. Beyond hotels or tourism development, there is a great opportunity for gastronomy to be a part of that conversation and contribute to building a unique identity for the destination. We have a responsibility to showcase the richness of this region with honesty, supporting local producers, respecting the territory, and creating experiences that could not exist anywhere else. Kymaia gives us the opportunity to explore that conversation from another angle, with an open, relaxed proposal that is deeply connected to the Oaxacan coast.”

What do you enjoy most about working with the ingredients of Puerto Escondido and its surroundings?

EG: “The direct connection with the territory. Ingredients here have identity, seasonality, and a story behind them. Working with local producers and with products that come practically straight from the field or the sea allows us to create a cuisine that is honest, sensitive, and deeply connected to this place.”

Kymaia’s remote location means that guests have most (or all) of their meals on property. How do you approach this to ensure they always have varied options?

EG: “Diversity is part of the concept. We have three distinct spaces: Septimus (the hotel’s signature restaurant), Huachinango (a relaxed poolside spot), and La Cueva (an intimate, underground space), each with its own personality. We work with seasonal ingredients and dynamic menus that are constantly evolving, so that each meal offers a different experience throughout the stay.”

How is this new stage of collaboration among the three of you reflected in the culinary experience?

EG: “It’s a cuisine that combines experience, creativity, and sensitivity. We share the same philosophy of respect for the product and its origin, but each of us brings a different perspective. That constant dialogue between our viewpoints brings a richer, more human culinary proposal to life, deeply connected to Kymaia’s surroundings.”

VF & AT: “We share very similar values: respect for the product, attention to detail, and a cuisine that seeks to move people without unnecessarily complicating things. We want guests to leave with the feeling that they have experienced something authentic, connected to the place and to the people that make it possible.”

Constelaciones y Derivas: Arte de América Latina Desde la Colección FEMSA at MARCO, Monterrey

Placed in the heart of Monterrey in a gorgeous brick-colored building by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey) is a must-visit every time I’m in town. This year, the museum celebrates 50 years of the FEMSA collection, comprising a multi-generational selection of work by Latin American artists. Structured around five themes – territories, colonial structures, identities, alchemy, and abstraction and geometry), the exhibition is an invitation to explore Latin America and its art through different angles. As a Mexican, it took me a relatively long time to visit Los Cabos – it didn’t happen until 2015, when I was invited to a press trip. Before that, and like most people, I had a very specific vision in my mind when I heard the word Cabo: massive all-inclusive resorts packed with badly tanned spring breakers, nightclubs, and gigantic frozen margaritas.

Ever since that visit, I’ve returned about a dozen times, with each trip proving how much more there is to this Baja destination, which technically comprises two towns: the more tourist-oriented Cabo San Lucas and the laid-back San José del Cabo. I’ve become a huge fan of Cabo’s stunning beach-meets-desert landscape, its powerful waves, and ever-growing hospitality scene. So let’s get into it: gorgeous boutique hotels, squid ink cocktails, and whale encounters await.

Where to Stay

Drift (pictured above) // With a fantastic location in the heart of San José, Drift is not a beachfront hotel, yet it’s a great option if you’re here to explore –plus the rates are excellent. Rooms are spacious and filled with light, featuring whitewashed walls and concrete features – including sexy open soaking tubs in some suites–, and brought to life by details like wicker lamps and pretty textiles. The casual restaurant serves solid all-day offerings and cocktails that taste especially good at happy hour (daily from 5:00 to 7:00 PM).

El Ganzo (pictured above) // Placed by one of Cabo’s few swimmable beaches, El Ganzo is both a hotel and a space for the arts, hosting live music performances and welcoming musicians to the on-property recording studio. A roster of international artists has left its mark on the walls over the years, creating everything from murals to in-suite installations. Two other reasons to love El Ganzo: its culinary program, helmed by José Luis Hinostroza (of ARCA Tulum) and its commitment to sustainability as Mexico’s first B-Corp certified hotel.

Acre Resort // Set on a sprawling 25-acre property, the experience at Acre is centered on a farm that supplies the Acre Restaurant kitchen with fresh ingredients. The farm is also home to a delightful array of creatures – goats, donkeys, horses, and puppies – many of which were rescued from abandonment. Sleeping here means you can choose one of the cozy treehouses floating above the jungle canopy; a villa with a plunge pool and a rooftop terrace, or one of the spacious haciendas, designed by Mexican architect Héctor Esrawe.

La Valise Los Cabos /(pictured below) // The East Cape, with majestic landscapes barely interrupted by a few constructions, provides an incredible setting for this design-oriented hotel, composed of only nine casas – each with its own style and personality. Palapa roofs, airy terraces, and colorful tiles bring plenty of Mexican vibes to each space. Days here are spent lounging by the pool, unwinding with a beach massage, or partaking in one of many mindfulness-oriented activities. Its secluded location – and its ages-12-and-over policy – make it one of the most romantic hotels in Cabo.

Nest Baja (pictured below) // Located on Cabo’s East Cape, this whitewashed boutique hotel has conversation pits, guestrooms with private terraces, and untamed views of the Sea of Cortez.

Where to Eat

Lumbre // For a long time, Cabo wasn’t precisely known as a culinary destination, with offerings mostly limited to whatever your resort was serving. Luckily, chefs like Querétaro-born César Pita have made it their mission to make the most of Baja’s incredible bounty –and infuse it with a touch of fire (hence the name) and plenty of creativity. Placed right off the San José Art Walk, Lumbre is warm, stylish, and just plain fun. I strongly recommend getting the seven-course tasting menu and letting the kitchen surprise you. The bar team makes a solid martini, too.

Semillón // Tucked in the beautiful Puerto Raíz, a lush enclave lined with gardens – and very popular for weddings–, Semillón makes this natural setting the perfect canvas for a feast that is as fresh and tranquil as it is delicious, allowing ingredients from the orchard to shine. The menu concept comes courtesy of Javier Plasencia, one of Baja’s greatest culinary ambassadors. It’s an especially enchanting place for brunch, with specialties like avocado toast with egg and chickpea chorizo and fluffy pancakes.

Taquería El Fogón // There’s always that time during a trip when a very specific craving hits: good old, no-frills tacos. That is the time to head to El Fogón in San José. Grab a plastic table and explore the menu on the wall for inspiration: classic pork al pastor, carne asada, and grilled shrimp always hit the spot, while the taquería’s iconic megagringa –a gigantic tortilla with cheese and al pastor meat– remains a house favorite. On Thursdays and Saturdays, you can find generous bowls of red or white pozole.

Ruba’s Bakery & Bistro // Placed in a charming house from the 1940s in downtown San José, Ruba’s serves comforting bistro-style fare throughout the day. Its airy terrace, brightened by colorful murals and plenty of greenery, is an inspiring setting for long brunches –the homemade pan dulce, birria sandwich, and the chilaquiles, served with Valle de Guadalupe-style fire-roasted lamb, are not to be missed. In the evening, come for the Neapolitan-style pizza and a glass of wine.

Where to Drink

Outpost // There is always an excuse to hang out at this Cabo San Lucas favorite, a self-described “urban farm-to-table and speakeasy,” with multiple spaces to kick back in throughout the day. The plant-filled terrace is a delight at brunch time, when huevos rancheros and a savory Pelo del Perro (vodka with tomato and beet juice) promise to bring you back to life. As the sun comes down, head to the bar for signature margaritas (many of the excellent cocktails incorporate herbs from their rooftop orchard) and live DJ beats.

Punta Médano Ceviche Bar // The official reason to visit this intimate spot in San Lucas is its excellent seafood: fantastically fresh ceviches, tiraditos, and aguachiles prepared with subtle Nikkei touches that let the region’s bounty shine. What not many know is that the cocktails are equally excellent, making Punta Médano a great dinner/pre-game spot. The house classic, Corazón Negro, is made with mezcal, rose syrup, and squid ink, providing that mystical black hue. If you’re a margarita lover, go for the smoky Mezcalita de Piña al Pastor.

Fermento // Discreetly hiding behind a nondescript door in the San José Art Walk, this speakeasy promises a fun night out on the town. Classic cocktails are part of the draw here –think flawless martinis and Negronis–, but don’t overlook the house creations, either. Inventive sips like Sol de Cardamomo (with tequila, Aperol, elderflower liquor, and cardamom) show the team’s creative chops. Large format, shareable cocktails and live DJ sets keep the energy strong as the evening progresses.

Clandestinna (pictured) // Eye-catching and decidedly sexy, Clandestinna hides behind a red door in downtown San José and gleefully leans into the Prohibition theme to create a sense of exclusivity, indulgence, and mischief. Timeless combos like martinis and caviar are best enjoyed with the bar’s exciting musical lineup, ranging from jazz and swing nights to African beats and even burlesque performances.

Where to Visit

Ocean Safari with Dip Expeditions // Few things have impacted me as deeply as seeing whales in their habitat. It’s one of the most humbling and awe-inspiring experiences I’ve been lucky enough to do in Mexico (yes, I cried). Encounters with majestic humpbacks are probably the #1 Cabo adventure in my book, and I love Dip Expedition’s conscious, respectful approach, with small groups and expert guides at the helm. The team also leads Sardine Run dives and four-day flying ray expeditions.

San José Art Walk // As the sun goes down and your days on the beach come to a close, downtown San José offers one of the loveliest evening strolls. Held every Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM (between November and June), the Art Walk invites you to slow down and explore the town’s Gallery District. Local galleries usually have intriguing exhibitions and artists-in-residence, eager to share their craft. Check out spots like Oceanside Art, focused on marine landscapes and scenes, and ARTE Gallery by Julián for organic-inspired metal sculptures.

Hikes on Cerro de la Z & Sierra de la Laguna // Cabo’s beautiful landscapes blend desert and mountain with the Pacific, and hikes are an incredible way to appreciate them from different perspectives. One of the most beloved (and easiest) trails is Cerro de la Z, accessible from Cabo San Lucas, which grants panoramic views of the city and the mountains. My personal favorite place to hike is Sierra de la Laguna, where trails lined with imposing cardon cacti lead you to a secret waterfall –perfect for a refreshing post-hike swim.

Let’s Chat: Helena Santana, Spa Director at Amomoxtli in Tepoztlán

Temazcal ceremonies are powerful, deeply healing rituals. Cristina Alonso talked to Helena Santana, in charge of the Spa at the always relaxing Amomoxtli, about the origins and meaning of this ancient tradition.

Many hotels and resorts offer temazcal ceremonies these days, but not all guests know where they come from. Can you tell us about the temazcal’s origins?

There are remains of ancient temazcal domes here in the Americas, and even in areas once populated by the Celts. Before the Spanish conquistadores arrived in Mexico, we used to pray inside the temazcal. The ritual entailed putting your body under extreme heat and singing a series of chants to foster a spiritual connection. That is a ceremonial temazcal, while the medicinal temazcal is more focused on physical healing. Men used to bring pregnant women into these temazcales for a cleanse, both energetic and physical, that helped bring down inflammation in the uterus and avoid infections. At Amomoxtli, we blend the ceremonial and medicinal temazcal and incorporate healing ingredients like honey and aloe.

What does a traditional ceremony look like?

The ceremony represents a rebirth. The healer welcomes guests with copal smoke to cleanse their energies before they enter the dome, which is dark and damp, like a mother’s womb, and the drums and chants symbolize the mother’s heartbeat. At Amomoxtli, we usually place 28 hot stones—called “abuelas,” as they carry very ancestral wisdom—in the middle, and we bathe them with water infused with medicinal plants to produce hot, cleansing steam. The ceremony is divided into four parts or “doors,” each symbolizing a cardinal point, connecting heaven and earth. Our healers explain what each door represents at an emotional and spiritual level.

What makes the temazcal ceremony so powerful?

It’s a challenge for the mind and body. We all want to be in control, and it’s very unsettling to step into a dark, hot dome where we have no choice but to surrender. The heat helps beat your ego and your fears, so you can experience a rebirth. I was a danzante and part of the Native American Church (an indigenous religious movement), so I’ve been very firm about doing things respectfully here at Amomoxtli. The temazcaleros who work with us here are danzantes, people of Lakota heritage (Native Americans also known as the Teton Sioux), and each has their own distinct chants and ways of leading the ceremony, but it all comes from the same place. We want our guests to experience the ceremony deeply and truly heal. It’s such a gift to bear witness to these stories of healing, forgiveness, and liberation.

Born in Saltillo, Mestiz founder Daniel Valero’s fascination with Mexican artisans first inspired him to found Mestiz as a hobby, never really knowing what it would become. Just like the whimsical, technicolor pieces he creates and lovingly defines as “wild objects,” the project took a life of its own. At his San Miguel de Allende showroom inside Fábrica La Aurora, massive wicker lampshades, hand-carved wooden cabinets, and spiky pottery make a strong case against minimalism. Daniel’s endless imagination has materialized in collaborations with brands like Auberge Collection, Hermès, and Monoprix. –CA

Dream Duo: Casa Dragones and Rosetta Present Diálogos Gastronómicos

Salón Rosetta

Rosetta might be one of the most popular restaurants in town, but its upstairs cocktail lounge, Salón Rosetta, still feels like an unveiled treasure. These days, the bar is hosting Diálogos Gastronómicos, a tasting menu imagined by chef Elena Reygadas, featuring elegant bite-sized dishes, each paired with sips of Casa Dragones tequila and cocktails. I’m still dreaming of the crab leg and tequila reposado combo. “It’s a very natural collaboration,” says Bertha González, CEO of Casa Dragones. “Elena was one of the first chefs to trust us. These experiences are so meaningful because they allow us to breathe new life into our tequila.” Diálogos Gastronómicos is available until July 18. –CA

My Favorite 4-Room Escape: Desierto Azul

People often ask me where I go to escape—and being a travel journalist, myriad places come to mind. Mexico and Italy dominate this category. But a surf town 90 minutes north of Cabo by the name of Todos Santos sees me return for respite time and time again. It’s a place where dusty, unpaved roads lead to unprepossessing, design-centric boutique hotels. Desert meets Pacific here—two settings that resonate cathartically for me. Cacti, crashing waves, the dry sun, all in my favorite country.

A four-key boutique hotel called Desierto Azul is my secret refuge. It’s a boho-chic bolthole that stares out at untamed Baja desert and jagged peaks in the distance, the beach not far in the other direction. After you check in with owner Fabrizio (a first-time hotelier whose passion for the property is contagious), you step into the hotel’s backyard, where a vanishing-edge pool and a gargantuan chaise for two captivate you on first entrance. I recently brought one of my best friends here—it took her breath away, so much so that she decided this small yet restorative sanctuary will be where she and her partner marry in 2027. Oh, and for the health-minded among us: everything on property is organic—including the on-site bakery helmed by Fabrizio and his family. —BB

Guadalajara’s Coolest Bars — Chosen by a Chef & Spirits Master

There’s always an excuse to visit Guadalajara, but these days, we have a very specific one in mind: its bar scene. Cristina Alonso talked to Chef José Luis Hinostroza and spirits-master Arturo Santos of the much-lauded Mecenas Bar, where everything – from fortified wines to liqueurs – is crafted in-house, to learn about their favorite spots for a night out on the town, tapatío-style.

JLH: “El Gallo Altanero. It looks simple, but it’s not: well-done classics, great ice, and a brutally good agave selection.”

AS: “Luperca has a very strong selection.”

JLH: “De La O. It’s laid-back and has the soul of a cantina, as well as good drinks and that tapatío energy that comes naturally without being forced.”

AS: “Pare de Sufrir is really cool. They pour mezcales from Mezonte, produced especially for them, and you can dance cumbia all night long.”

JLH: “The most creative drinks are at Hibol, because of its precise concept, and at Mecenas, because we focus on creativity from the very beginning – we make our own liqueurs, fortified wines, and many bases from scratch.”

AS: “El Gallo Altanero. They change their menu every couple of months.”

Mexico City’s Beloved Museo Dolores Olmedo Reopens Its Doors

La Noria, a stunning sixteenth-century hacienda in Xochimilco, could easily be worth a visit on its own – an estate lush with tranquil gardens populated by peacocks and xoloitzcuintles (Mexico’s iconic hairless dogs). Yet there are countless treasures to discover inside the former residence of collector Dolores Olmedo, including the largest collection of work by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, as well as a rich selection of prehispanic and Mexican popular art, among other wonders. After an ambitious four-year renovation, we can’t wait to return to this spectacular museum –and pay our respects to those friendly xolos. –CA

Mercado 20 de Noviembre, Oaxaca

Markets are one of the most fascinating and fun – and sometimes over-stimulating – ways to discover a city, and Oaxaca’s Mercado 20 de Noviembre is no exception. Open since 1882, this is the place to go for a serious immersion in regional products, from mezcal and quesillo to chocolate and fried grasshoppers, as well as all sorts of colorful crafts. Above all, it’s the place you go to eat. Its legendary Pasillo de Humo is a paradise for all things grilled, where a series of stalls await with meaty marvels like chorizo, cecina, and tasajo, served with handmade tortillas, salsas, and avocado slices… and the irresistible smoke that gives the section its name. –CA

Cristina here, your Managing Editor, proudly presenting my hometown today. Mexico City, as you know, is a gigantic, chaotic, incredible metropolis – home to more than 20 million people and more art, food, architecture, and history than one can absorb in a lifetime. Although I was born here and I’ve lived here for most of my life, the city still surprises me every day, and I’ve loved watching it get the attention it deserves these past few years–finally!

As hard as it is to encapsulate Mexico City’s offerings in any guide, I like to think this selection is a lovely snapshot of its many layers – history, hospitality, gastronomy – as experienced in places rich with backstories and inspiring concepts. And worry not – we will revisit Mexico City many times over the next weeks and months.

Octavia Casa (Condesa) // The beauty of simplicity shines at this Condesa boutique hotel. Envisioned by Mexican designer Roberta Maceda – creator of Octavia women’s apparel brand – and executed by architect Pablo Pérez Palacios, the house’s zen-like atmosphere comes courtesy of neutral hues, clean lines, and plenty of natural light, each space thoughtfully accented with details like Encrudo pottery. After a day of urban thrills, Octavia’s serenity is the perfect balm: a glass of natural wine on the rooftop before retreating to one of only six suites.

Casa Polanco (Polanco) // It’s hard to think of a better setting than Casa Polanco. Placed by Parque Lincoln, the hotel is housed in a gorgeous Neocolonial mansion from the forties, restored and reimagined with contemporary touches. Every detail of its uniquely styled 19 rooms and suites is impossibly tasteful, mixing modern furniture with pieces of Mexican art and much-coveted amenities like Dyson hair dryers and Xinú bath products. Make sure to carve an afternoon to sip a glass of wine at the library –and perhaps pretend this is actually home.

Hotel San Fernando (Condesa) // The dream of Condesa’s Art Deco is alive and well at this Bunkhouse property, set in a former apartment building from 1947. Refreshed by Mexican studio Reurbano, the building maintains its most iconic elements – stained glass, cheeky floor tiles, spiral staircase – and features 19 coral-hued guest rooms furnished by La Metropolitana. For longer stays, several of them offer kitchenettes and dining tables. Every morning, breakfast awaits at the rooftop (included in your rate), while downstairs, Lounge Fernando offers light bites, craft cocktails, and excellent people-watching.

UMA Casa (Lomas) // The mostly residential Lomas neighborhood is rarely on travelers’ radars, which makes staying at UMA Casa feel like such a special discovery. As its name promises, the property is owner Claudia González’s family home –the place where she grew up, hospitality as part of her DNA. Beautifully designed by Guadalajara-based Estudio Claudina Flores, each corner of the house – including its nine ingredient-themed suites – is a tribute to Mexico through color, art, and design. Details like in-suite massages, morning yoga, and rooftop breakfasts feel equally warm and luxurious.

Em // Life has taken chef Lucho Martínez to work in kitchens from Mexico City to Cancun, but it is his native Veracruz that inspires the menu at his fine dining spot in Roma, named after his young daughter. The state’s incredible natural diversity –from its foggy mountains and jungles to its long coastline – and rich ingredients, like coffee, mamey, and fresh seafood, are translated into a meticulously prepared eight-course tasting menu, each one a delightful surprise.

Comal Oculto // What started as a tiny kitchen with a sidewalk communal table has now evolved into a proper brick-and-mortar restaurant, maintaining its casual charm and original mission: to honor the art of antojitos. Hot off the comal, creations like chamorro tacos, gorditas de chicharrón, enmoladas, and salsa verde-bathed flautas ahogadas (my favorites) are perfect for fueling up before a day of city adventures. Pair with housemade aguas frescas and aromatic café de olla.

Botánico // Amidst towering cacti and lush greenery, this Condesa eatery honors its name by offering one of the most enchanting settings in town (it’s great for dates, by the way). Helming the kitchen are chefs Alejandra Navarro and Ernesto Hernández, whose fantastic use of fresh ingredients results in a delicious and comforting blend of seasonal creations and timeless favorites – think mussels in a coconut-lemongrass sauce, Hollandaise-bathed ribeye burger, and crisp green salad with sage leaf dressing.

Castacán // Beyond the ever-popular Contramar, Chef Gabriela Cámara has built a solid presence in the city, including this wonderful taco spot in Roma Norte. A temple for all things pork, Castacán serves comfort at its finest in the form of cochinita tacos, lechón tortas, and castacán-topped chilaquiles, plus a great array of salsas to kick things up a notch. Save room for the yogurt soft serve at the end. Top it with olive oil and Maldon salt and thank us later.

Cana // Drawing inspiration from her own stories across places like Northern Mexico, New York, and the Mediterranean, chef Fabiola Escobosa’s welcoming Juárez bistro is one of those places where everyone at the table is bound to find something they love. Everything is equally delicious and beautifully presented, from shareable appetizers like fresh oysters and pan de yuca, to mains like steak frites and an excellent Caesar salad. The carefully curated wine list focuses on low-intervention labels.

Tlecán // I hate waiting in line, but Tlecán is one of the very few places I’m willing to do it for (it moves fairly quickly, too). Once inside, the prehispanic-inspired decor, the scent of copal, and a fabulous playlist immediately set the mood: it’s time to dive into the universe of agave. Sourced from small producers across the country, explore artisanal liquids like mezcal, sotol, and bacanora with the help of the incredible bar team. Don’t sleep on the cocktails, either – I always get the Martini de Papantla, with mezcal and vanilla-infused vermouth.

Mauro (pictured) // The brainchild of Limantour alums Ricardo and Eduardo Nava, this bar is a tribute to their grandfather, Mauro, a master of the art of aperitivo. Since its opening, it’s been racking up the awards, and with good reason – it’s that rare place where the drinks and the atmosphere are equally fantastic. Try the Basilico (tequila, vermouth rose, basil, and peach) or the Negroni 1929 (with cacao nib-infused Campari and a touch of strawberry water).

Salón San Luis // With almost 90 years of history, this family-run dance salon welcomes you with old-school booths, white-coated servers, and a dance floor bathed in red light that begs for your presence – no matter your level of expertise. From salsa and merengue to cumbia, the live bands (two each night) keep the floor busy til the wee hours of the morning, populated by a healthy mix of locals, longtime customers, visitors, and very serious dancers.

Bósforo // Hidden behind a curtain in Centro Histórico is this paradise for mezcal lovers – a place that forgoes PR and publicity and remains an icon in its own right. Low-lit, bohemian, and moving to the rhythm of an eclectic world music playlist, this is the place to explore artisanal mezcal from places like Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero, led by the experts behind the bar. Fun fact: this is where I had my first date with my husband.

Form + Matter (pictured) // With a healthy blend of creativity and mad scientist vibes, this Roma bar was conceived by restaurateur Po Tsai and Handshake grads José Olivas and David Rocha. Inspired by regions like Argentina and the Mediterranean, each cocktail is the result of carefully executed techniques like fat-washing and clarification, many of which take place inside a custom-made lab. I especially love the Miso Honey, a strong yet balanced concoction of bourbon, browned butter, red miso, and honey.

Mexican folklore at El Bazaar Sábado

Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso // Since its origins in 1583, this stunning baroque building has served many purposes: Jesuit school, military barracks, the first Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, and finally, a museum in 1994. The building itself, with its arches and leafy courtyards, is a beauty to behold, but its greatest treasures await on its walls and ceilings. Known as “the cradle of Mexican Muralism,” the museum is home to spectacular work by artists like Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, and Fernando Leal.

Mercado Coyoacán // Among Mexico City’s many, many markets, Coyoacán is one of my favorites. Right in the heart of Coyoacán, it’s really easy to reach and navigate, its stalls lined with everything from fresh fish, bright fruit and produce, and colorful crafts, to a wide array of esoteric offerings (think herbs and love potions). The main draw might just be the celebrated Tostadas Coyoacán, a group of stalls doling out crunchy tostadas with toppings like shrimp cocktail, tinga de pollo, ceviche, cochinita, and al pastor pork.

Museo Nacional de Antropología // The city’s most-visited museum, it’s home to the world’s largest collection of prehispanic artifacts from Mexico and Mesoamerica, housed in an impressive building designed by Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez. Distributed across 23 exhibition halls, the collection can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t skip the Mexica or Maya rooms if you’re a bit short on time. If you visit before August 30, check out Futbol 2026, Annie Leibovitz, featuring a series of soccer-centric images by the legendary photographer.

El Bazaar Sábado // Housed in a lovely building in San Ángel, this craft market has promoted Mexican design every Saturday since it opened its doors in 1960. Browsing its hallways, you’ll find a dizzying display of creativity spanning across all sorts of styles and regions of Mexico: papier maché sculptures, rich textiles, clay Nativity scenes, beaded Wixárica sculptures, and contemporary houseware, just to name a few. In between vendors, you can sample mezcal or Mexican chocolate. A successful souvenir hunt is guaranteed.

Like many of you, I hold a special place in my heart for Puerto Vallarta. It’s one of the first beach towns I visited as a kid, and I have blurry memories – but many cute photos – of myself and my cousins playing for hours on the beach. Ever since, I’ve been back for all sorts of reasons, including work, my first beach getaway with my now husband, and a bachelorette-turned-canceled-engagement trip. Xinalani // Wellness is the name of the game at this serene hideaway, beloved for its yoga and emotional healing retreats. Accessible only by boat, Xinalani immerses you in nature at each of its 33 casitas – most of them palapa-style; a few enclosed and equipped with AC. Days here are spent connecting to yourself and your surroundings, with a roster of activities that range from meditation, yoga, and temazcal ceremonies to cooking classes and kayak tours. Rounding up the offerings is the healthy menu, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options.

Casa Kimberly // Few hotels can brag about a backstory like Casa Kimberly. The love nest of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, the property comprises two houses – one owned by each star-crossed lover – connected by el Puente del Amor. Its nine spacious suites, named after the stars and their most iconic films and roles, are uniquely decorated and feature details such as four-poster beds and claw-foot tubs. For the dreamiest sunsets, head to The Iguana and explore its extensive mezcal and tequila selection before settling down for dinner.

Casitas Maraikas // Casitas Maraikas may only be 40 minutes from Downtown Vallarta, but its no-frills vibes and rustic style make it feel like the most remote tropical hideaway. Each of its suites and casitas feels fully immersed in nature, with only curtains separating you from the lush jungle. The schedule here can go from chill – sound healing sessions, boat rides – to buzzing, with a roster of DJs playing live tunes on the beach every Saturday night.

Tintoque // Set in a beautiful house by the Cuale River, Tintoque offers one of the loveliest dining experiences in town: a seasonal tasting menu that is as visually stunning as it is delicious. From the open kitchen, led by Puerto Vallarta native chef Joel Ornelas, the team doles out creations built with carefully selected ingredients, like fresh fish, all caught using the ikejime Japanese technique, crisp vegetables, and local mushrooms, which find their best mates in the thoughtful wine pairings.

Ita // There’s always a good reason to visit this warm Colonia Versalles restaurant, helmed by Chef Salvador Carrillo. Mornings bring laid-back vibes and beloved breakfast items like chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and quesabirrias. As the sun goes down, soft light bathes the dining room and the menu takes on a more elevated twist, with inventive dishes like lacquered pork chop and lamb in merlot reduction. The tasting menu is an excellent option if you want a deep dive into Chef Salvador’s creative mind.

El Puerco de Oro // Less is more at this fantastic taco spot in Versalles, run by Ana Martina García (Tintoque’s Joel Ornelas’ mom). With only five items on the menu, you can bet every bite will be packed with flavor, from bean-and-panela cheese tacos and quesadillas to the house stars: crispy pork belly tacos. Everything is served on homemade blue corn tortillas and enhanced with a spectacular salsa selection. A favorite for breakfast after a night out, El Puerco de Oro pours excellent coffee.

Icú // Named after the Huichol word for corn, this Zona Romántica eatery honors Mexico’s sacred ingredient and its many flavors and traditions with two inventive tasting menus, available in five or nine courses. Under Chef Mauricio Leal’s vision, seasonal creations include cheese-stuffed zucchini blossoms, seared tuna in recado negro, and pressed chicharrón tamal, elegantly presented and flawlessly paired with a strong selection of Mexican wines. The space is intimate yet relaxed, crowned by super knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Torio // Lovingly called a “Japanese taquería,” this temaki bar is the brainchild of Javier Antúnez and Agustín Chaz, who are bringing the freshness and flavor to Colonia Versalles, one hand roll at a time. Grab a seat at the beautiful bar and feast your eyes on the team as they prepare gorgeous nigiri, sashimi, and rolls with fresh ingredients, many of them locally sourced. Omakase fans: make sure you visit on Fridays and put your trust in the chefs’ hands.

El Colibrí // Steps away from Vallarta’s beloved Malecón, this speakeasy is set in a jungly patio that gets prettier and livelier as the night progresses, warmed by candlelight and a top-notch playlist (or live DJs on weekends). While the cocktail menu changes often, you can count on excellent cocktails crafted with artisanal Mexican spirits and liqueurs, homemade juices and syrups, and plenty of flair. Not into mixology? Opt for local beer on tap.

Majahuitas // A secluded beach just south of Vallarta, Majahuitas is the place to go for tropical bliss and clubby vibes. On Saturdays, hop on a boat, grab a table near the ocean, and get the afternoon started with a large spritz and a few shareable bites. As the day progresses, a roster of local and international DJs transforms the sand into a dance floor. You can choose between several packages –from the most basic, which includes transportation and access, to full table access with credit for food and drinks.

Chiro Taberna de Costa // One of the many gifts agave has granted us, raicilla is a mystical, delicious spirit that hails from Jalisco and Nayarit. Created by the team behind Atarraya raicilla, Chiro is an incredibly fun spot to explore this liquid, no matter your level of expertise. Sip it neat or in creative cocktails prepared with other regional treasures, like tejuino (a fermented corn-based beverage) and tuba (made with palm tree sap). Live music and laid-back cantina vibes make it hard to leave.

El Barracuda & El Solar (Downtown Location) // Few things are better than sitting in front of the waves and watching the day turn into night. Placed right by the ocean on Camarones Beach, this local favorite gives you a front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets and, with some luck, whale sightings during the winter. Fresh, no-frills seafood is at the heart of the menu, from ceviches to grilled fish, with ice-cold beer and agave-based cocktails for pairing. Weekend nights bring live music and plenty of energy, courtesy of local and international DJs.
